Travel award reimbursement must follow UW System and university established policy and procedure. All airfare, car rental, and hotel must be booked through FoxWorld Travel using a specific booking code. If not booked through this system, these charges will not be eligible for reimbursement:

Harold E. Hughes Awards Luncheon

On Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at the Harold E. Hughes Awards luncheon, awards will be presented for the outstanding rural professional, rural program and rural community.

Nominees are being accepted for the following four Harold E. Hughes Awards of Excellence award categories. Nominations should be submitted by March 1:

Exceptional Rural Professional Award
This award is given annually to a rural professional who exemplifies outstanding contribution to the rural alcohol and drug abuse field. This person works without seeking recognition for their efforts and does so tirelessly for those who suffer the effects of alcohol and drug abuse.

Exceptional Rural Program Award
This award is given annually to a rural professional who exemplifies outstanding contribution to the rural alcohol and drug abuse field. This program works without seeking recognition for their efforts and does so tirelessly for those who suffer the effects of alcohol and drug abuse.

Exceptional Rural Community Award
This award is given annually to a rural community that exemplifies outstanding contribution to the rural alcohol and drug abuse field. This community has established exceptional services to the rural alcohol and drug abuse field that helps to improve the lives of those who suffer the effects of alcohol and drug abuse

Exceptional Service Responsiveness to Rural Issues and Needs
This award is given annually to a person, program, or agency that exemplifies outstanding contribution to the rural alcohol and drug abuse field. This nominee does not have to be from the rural population, yet they have to have established exceptional responsiveness to the rural alcohol and drug abuse field that helps to improve the lives of those who suffer the effects of alcohol and drug abuse.


The following award will be announced during the luncheon:

Larry W. Monson Annual Award

This award will honor an exceptional rural professional for leadership and contributions to rural alcohol and drug abuse field excellence.

Scholarship Source Information

Deanna Applehans and Dick Kessler Memorial Scholarships
The Deanna Applehans and Dick Kessler Memorial Scholarship fund was started in 2016 by an anonymous donor to honor the memory of Applehans, a longtime advocate, contributor and manager of the National Rural Institute through her position as an Outreach Program Manager at UW-Stout and Kessler, an integral contributor to the AODA field at National, State and Local levels. Assistance includes full or partial conference registration, (which includes residence hall double room and on-campus meals). 

Michael E.E. Campbell Memorial Scholarship
The Michael E.E. Campbell Memorial Scholarship was established in March 2003, to honor Michael's personal and professional contributions to the alcohol and other drug abuse and mental health field. Two scholarships will be awarded. Scholarship covers conference registration only.

Cenpatico/Centene Corporation Scholarship
As a part of the conference sponsorship provided by the Cenpatico/Centene Corporation, a portion is used towards scholarships. Assistance may include full or partial conference registration, (which includes residence hall double room and on-campus meals).

Harold E. Hughes Scholarship Fund
This perpetual scholarship fund has been established to provide ongoing recognition and honor of the contributions made to the alcohol and other drug abuse prevention and treatment field in the United States by Harold E. Hughes. Two scholarships are awarded at the end of the conference for the following year. Scholarship covers conference registration only.

Larry W. Monson Memorial Scholarship
This perpetual scholarship fund was established in memory of Larry Monson, co-founder of the National Rural Institute. It is awarded annually to a rural professional in the alcohol and drug abuse field who has made strong contributions to the institute. One scholarship will be awarded. Scholarship covers conference registration only.

Green Bay Packers Scholarship
These scholarship funds became available through the work of two dedicated longtime attendees, Jeffrey Bentz and Chestor Marcol. Their work resulted in securing funding from the Green Bay Packers to support Institute attendance and will provide a limited number of scholarships. Assistance may include full or partial conference registration, (which includes residence hall double room and on-campus meals). A travel stipend may also be awarded for travel expenses (as funds are available). 

National Rural Alcohol and Drug Abuse Network Scholarship (NRADAN)
These scholarships are provided by the National Rural Alcohol and Drug Abuse Network. NRADAN, Inc. will provide a limited number of scholarships annually. Assistance may include full or partial conference registration, (which includes residence hall double room and on-campus meals). A travel stipend may also be awarded for travel expenses (as funds are available). 

Scaife Family Foundation Medical Scholar/Allied Health Professionals Scholarship
The Scaife Family Foundation of West Palm Beach, Florida, funds scholarships for medical students or Allied Health professionals interested in practicing in rural America and other addiction specific topics. Assistance includes full or partial conference registration, (which includes residence hall double room and on-campus meals). A stipend may also be awarded to scholarship recipients for travel expenses (on selected tracks only as there are funds available). Registration (Full and Partial) and travel are available for selected tracks only as determined annually. Other tracks may be selected but are not eligible for travel reimbursement.
