Keynote: So What Do You Do for a Living?
Friday, 9:00 am
Memorial Student Center, Great Hall

Debra Lawrence, Ph.D

What do you say when someone asks you where you work? Do you hesitate to share the details of your day? Was it just about snacks and story time? Explore the value of our chosen profession, identify ways to convey the significance of our work, and validate the critical role we play in children’s development.

Working with Children Who Challenge Us
Friday Afternoon, Sessions 3 and 4
Memorial Student Center, Great Hall

Debra Lawrence, Ph.D

Children come into our programs with a vast array of experiences. Understanding the function of behaviors that challenge us and recognizing the forms that these behaviors manifest can assist in determining the best strategy to teach replacement behaviors. This session helps participants identify the cause of challenging behaviors, provides several strategies for working with these behaviors, and teaches preventive instead of reactive measures, so all children are successful.

Lost Opportunities: How Teaching Interferes with Learning
Saturday Morning, Sessions 1 and 2
Memorial Student Center, Great Hall

Debra Lawrence, Ph.D

The purpose of early childhood education is to provide opportunities for children to acquire the dispositions of learning required for all aspects of success. This session brings to light the unintended consequences of teaching and provides strategies for increasing learning in your classroom.
