We take food allergies and intolerances seriously and want you to have an enjoyable and safe dining experience.

University Dining is committed to providing an allergy-friendly dining experience. To help students and others with allergies or intolerances stay safe in our dining operations, the following resources and services are available: 

  • Access to our registered dietitian 
     
  • Online menus with allergens and ingredients
     
  • A special diety pantry for use upon approval

Individuals with food allergies or intolerances are strongly encouraged to meet with the University Dining Registered Dietitian prior to your arrival on campus, or as soon as you arrive to campus to receive additional support and assistance with navigating your dining experiences.

At your meeting with the dietitian, you will be provided with:

  • An individual tour of our dining facilities
     
  • Information on our Special Diet Pantry (for students living on campus with dining plans and medically documented food allergies or intolerances that may benefit from the diet pantry)
     
  • Personalized information specific to your food allergies 
     
  • Meeting key management staff that will be an ally in helping you manage your allergies or intolerances

One of the unique features of University Dining is that we offer a Special Diet Pantry (SDP) for those students who have medically documented food allergies and/or intolerances, and need additional foods prepared in a separate kitchen. Frequently Asked Questions 

Below you will find answers to commonly asked questions regarding food allergies and intolerances. 

How do I know what menu items are safe for me to eat?

University Dining offers transparent menus and an online database with ingredient and allergen information for all items produced in our facilities. The database can filter for the top 8 allergens (wheat, eggs, milk, soy, crustacean shellfish, fish, tree nuts, and peanuts). Items naturally free from gluten are also designated. 

Ingredient information can be found:

  • On our website by selecting the 'View Menu' under each location on our Where to Eat page
     
  • Kiosks within our dining location 
     
  • Dining tab in the Stout app

If you have a question about allergens or ingredients, please ask to speak with a manager. 

University Dining encourages all students who have allergies or intolerances to be their own advocate. Plan ahead. Ask questions. Help us help you safely enjoy your dining experience. We welcome feedback if you have suggestions or concerns.   

If you have peanut or tree nut allergies, University Dining recommends avoiding bakery items, as nuts are used in the bakery production area. If you have gluten, wheat, fish or shellfish allergies, University Dining recommends avoiding fried food items as fryers are utilized for many different products.

What do I do if I have a medically documented food allergy,

We recommend the following steps if you have a medically documented food allergy or intolerances.

  1. Contact the University Dining Registered Dietitian, Sarah Sippl RD, CD, by telephone at 715.232.3599, or by email at sippls@uwstout.edu to schedule a meeting. 
  2. Either before or at your first meeting with the dietitian, provide University Dining with a physician signed Medical Statement for Students with Documented Food Allergies and Intolerances form, available by contacting the dietitian as noted above.
  3. Your Medical Statement can be provided to the Registered Dietitian by any of the following methods:

What resources are available to me if I avoid certain foods

Students who choose to avoid certain foods or food groups because of a personal preference, medical condition (altered textures, carbohydrate counting, or heart health), or restrictions for religious purposes are encouraged to meet with the University Dining Registered Dietitian. The dietitian can provide you additional support, resources, tours, and introductions to key management staff to make your dining experience satisfying and successful.
